Hama Massacre at 30!

As we commemorate the 30th anniversary of the infamous Hama Massacre, it is clear that the Assads have learned nothing. The protesters, on the other hand, though most of whom are too young to remember the true darkness of those days, seem to have learned the most important lesson of all, namely that the key to winning to your freedom lies in confronting your fears not burying your head in the sand, or falling on nihilistic tactics that could only turn your worst nightmares into self-fulfilling prophecies.

Thursday 02, 2012

Today’s death toll: 17. The Breakdown: 4 in Deraa, 3 in Homs, 3 in Aleppo, 3 in Idlib, 1 in Quneitrah, 1 in Hama, 1 in Rural Damascus and 1 in Raqqah.

Op-Eds & Special Reports

Hama City: Activists pour red paint in the streets and Noria to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Hama massacre which began on February 2, 1982 and lasted for about 1 month killing between 30-40,000 locals , , The move comes as well as a sign of protest against the current crackdown by troops loyal to Bashar Al-Assad, the son of the perpetrator of the first massacre who seems bent on filling his father’s shoes, even, or perhaps especially, if it kills us. But, as a local activist put it “Hafez died but Hama didn't.” And as my own son added “So will Bashar die as well, but Hama won't.”
