More of the Same!

Killing, defection, defiance, and more killing... Such is the cycle of daily life in Syria, and it continued on this Valentine’s day.

Tuesday February 14, 2012

Today’s death toll: 48. The Breakdown: 11 in Homs City, 4 in Al-Atareb (Aleppo), 12 in Idlib City, 5 in Albou Kamal (Deir Ezzor Province)…

Hama City is reportedly under renewed assault since Monday evening, with sweep operations and pounding touching most of the restive neighborhoods, including Hamidiyeh, Frayeh, and Eleilaat.

Activists report that a major defection has taken place from the ranks of the military security apparatus in Tartous, the defectors managed to leave the city, some say in the direction of Idlib, with loyalists hard on their heels. Considering the sectarian politics in Tartous and other coastal communities, defectors might include many Alawite officers. Alawite communities along the coast have witnessed over the last few days a number of anti-Assad rallies that were suppressed by loyalists. We have witnessed similar activities in Alawite communities in coastal region in the early days of the Revolution, but the situation calmed down after the suppression of the revolt in Banyas.

Op-Eds & Special Reports
My take on U.S. policy: “Ultimately, Western powers have no choice but to intervene. Until outside forces compel them to stop, the Assads will continue their murderous rampage with utter impunity. Negotiations have failed, sanctions have failed.”

Human Shields: this video from the Damascene town of Saqba in Eastern Ghoutah Region shows loyalist troops using locals as human shields to protect their tanks from rebel attacks (Feb 13) As I have said earlier, the regime might have regained access to towns in Eastern Ghoutah, but ever since, it has been in a quiet Guerilla warfare with local rebel groups.
